These days, it seems like everyone believes they can do a new floor installation themselves. If the DIY homeowner wants to learn how to install or sand and finish a floor, all it takes is a simple Google search, right? But can a five-minute tutorial really prepare you for your new floor installation? The truth is that it’s never that simple. While online videos and blogs might provide you with the fundamentals, there’s a lot more that goes into a professional floor installation than you might think. As National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Certified Professionals, The Hardwood Floor Company (The HFC) knows what a proper floor installation and sand and finish look like. Whether it’s how to properly acclimate the wood or understanding the difference between specific finishes, there’s a lot to know.
The NWFA Certified Professional
An NWFA Certified Professional is someone who has gone through extensive training and education in the field of wood flooring. They’ve taken the time to put their skills to the test in front of regional instructors that grade them on a pass or fail basis. Once they pass the test, they become a Certified Professional. The NWFA puts on workshops and training for anyone who wants to expand their knowledge and skill. Every team member at The HFC goes through this training so that they can provide our customers with quality craftsmanship—and educate them along the way.
What We Learn About New Floor Installation
There’s a lot that goes on during a team member’s NWFA training, with each HFC installer obtaining a breadth of invaluable knowledge that’s implemented into every floor we install. Some things that NWFA training consist of include:
- How to properly acclimate the wood before installation
- The effects of humidity on a floor installation
- How ventilation and humidification systems can ruin a wood floor
- Choosing and installing the right moisture barrier for a floor
- How to install a full-spread glue down floor
- The right glue and fastening systems for each floor
- How to choose the right sanding sequence for each floor
- The difference between hard wax oil finish and polyurethane
We don’t stop there when it comes to learning more about our craft. The HFC team regularly attends training and workshops around the country that enhance our knowledge of industry standards. Other times, we’ll learn more about innovative finishes and cutting edge tools available to make your new floor even more beautiful.
The HFC believes our NWFA team members need to be experts in every aspect of our field to provide our customers with the best possible service. It’s what makes us true craftsmen and our customers happy with the final results.
